Reflection - Oral (Research Presentation)
1. In the formal oral presentation in this course, identify your strengths and weaknesses in responding to the needs of the listening audience (e.g., attention-getting devices, organization, repetition, signposts, transitions, timing, visual aids).
The formal oral presentation I gave prior to the research proposal was good, promising and organized. I chose to give a power point presentation to walk through my research proposal and resources I would be using for research. Rather than using handy notes which most students used, I decided to go for a presentation in which all the information was present in front of my audience. It was very visual, clear and easy to understand. It mentioned abundant resources which I could use for my research project. In the end of the research, I used many of the resources I had stated in my research presentation. I used images to draw the attention of the audience and help them in visualizing the research topic of the Parallel Universe. It had cited definitions and texts from other sources which explained the basics of my research topic such as what my research topic is all about, how I will approach it and what can I achieve in the end of my research. The research presentation was well organized and there was no repetition. The timing between the various elements such as transition from explaining the research topic to handling the power point presentation was well executed.
2. In the formal oral presentation in this course, identify your strengths and weaknesses in controlling the aural channel (e.g., pace, pitch, paralanguage, tone, volume).
I did not have any major issues in conveying my point through oral medium to my audience. I tried my best to be clear and loud enough so that my audience could understand everything. Since I did not get any questions from the audience after the presentation, I assumed they understood the research presentation properly. I kept the pace of my voice to slow so that my audience can hear and understand each and every word I spoke. Because I am an international student from India, my English accent can sometimes be hard to understand. I realize this fact and hence I try to go slow and be more descriptive about the subject I have to address to put forward my point. Even though I faltered a few times during my presentation, I was able to make up for it by explaining the topic descriptively and staying calm.
3. In the formal oral presentation in this course, identify your strengths and weaknesses in controlling the body (e.g., eyes, gestures, posture, movement).
The concept of Parallel Universe is hard to visualize for most people, hence, I decided to include a PowerPoint presentation to assist the audience visually. I had to use my hands to point out the specifics such as the resources I would most likely use, definitions and images. I moved my eyes to make eye contact with all the viewers in the audience so that they feel that the presentation is interactive and they are a part of it. The only mistake I made while presenting I feel was blocking the view of the audience to see the presentation while I was explaining the specifics with my hand. I was standing on the side of the projector where the computer was easily accessible and I did not have to waste time to change the slides during the presentation. Overall the presentation was well crafted and presented. I got the approval from the entire class and the professor that I could go ahead and research on my topic for this semester. I also received applause from the entire class for our effort in the end.
